Note: Joey forgot to mention below, we were chasing him in a few segments (Up the Rodeo Refinery thru the bridge and at the Carquinez Scenic Loop) can’t catch em unless he stops pedaling.  The “chase” always makes it an interesting ride 🙂

Now to Joey’s recap…

We had another great turnout for one of our classic Saturday morning ride over the bridges and into Port Costa.

Such a large group turned out today and a big welcome to our newest HCC members Gary and Mark! Also a fist bump to Stephen who’s back on the bike after a short hiatus.

Right at the start things got off to a brisk pace as Rodger led the group out of Hercules. As we made our way past the refinery, Glenn became the roaring mouse and made an attack on San Pablo with Jonah, Arch and Gary on his tail only to reel him in right before the regroup at Vista Point.

From here, Thomas led the charge across the bridge and into Vallejo and took a 3 minute lead. Thankfully, he waited for us on Benicia Rd where things heated up again on the short downhill segment in front of St. Patrick with Thomas again dropping the hammer. This caught the attention of Archie who quickly got up to speed, sprinting in the big ring, with Jonah, Rodger, Gary, Adam, Andy, Paulo and Glenn in hot pursuit.

Once at Benicia State Park we made a quick regroup for a head count before continuing through Benicia and over the bridge. The group then tackled the short but steep Marina Vista Ave. However, Archie did a Mario Kart and took a short cut on the much flatter Buckley St segment.

At the Contra Costa Scenic Trail Jonah, Archie and Gary quickly organized and formed a pace line and ripped through the segment like bats out of hell. It was definitely an amazing site to to witness and truly shows their racing pedigree.

Into Port Costa another group of 2 wheeled enthusiast were also holding a group ride, the Hells Angels of Richmond was holding their Red & White Poker Run. The group was a bunch of rad guys just looking to have fun, much like us.

We even had discussions on the merits of sealed versus loose ball bearings, grease viscosity and taking switchbacks as fast as possible.

After having our fill of caffeine we headed back towards Hercules but not without picking up another rider, Sean, who road from Berkeley to Port Costa because he really wanted coffee and didn’t feel like going to Philz.

Jonah and Sean formed a 2 man break and hammered up Pomona, in the wind, up to Dead Fish where they waited for the rest of the group. Where we then finished up the ride back in Hercules.

Another solid ride and hope to see you out there next week
