Ride Recap – HCC Saturday Ride – 09/06/2014 – September Grand Fondo – Marshall Wall & Heart’s Desire

Hearts Desire 1

What’s up HCC!

We had another epic Grand Fondo for the month of September. Thanks to Andy M. for providing us with an awesome route! We had one new face joining us on the ride, Kevin L, welcome to HCC! Also Glad to see Wilbur A. from Agila Cycling joining us.

Hearts Desire

The morning started out overcast and cold as we rolled out at approximately 7:20 am with 17 riders headed for the Marshall Wall and Heart’s Desire Beach. The group carried a moderate pace throughout most of the ride with occasional hammering since a lot of us were first timers on the route.

The route yielded great climbs, descents, and panoramic views!

Hearts Desire 5

Everyone climbed well going up the Marshall Wall although Marco started to get leg cramps at this point. Our past trips up South Park, El Toyonal and Centennial Walls made the Marhsall Wall not seem too bad.

After a fast descent down, the group proceeded to ride on Highway 1 towards downtown Point Reyes where we had our halfway point food stop. We filled up on much needed sustenance such as scones, sandwiches, bananas, espresso shots, and some of us had Red Bull.

Hearts Desire 4

After recharging at Point Reyes, we continued on the route headed for Heart’s Desire. On the climb up to Heart’s Desire, Kenny was doing wheelies! This guy is a beast!

At Heart’s Desire, the guys got off the saddle and soaked in the view. The sky was clear and the sun was hot, perfect for a swim, not for us, but for the people who were already in the water.

Hearts Desire 2

We didn’t stay long at the beach as it was getting late and our curfew for many of us was nearing lol. The pace on Sir Francis Drake and Highway 1 towards Olema was fast and furious with the pain train switching drivers in the front, Kenny, Will, Chris, James, Glenn, and Jonah. We were going too fast and missed a turn, but we were able to take the next right turn and meet the rest of the gang to regroup in Olema.

The last 22 miles is always tough as the sun was beaming down on us. Thankfully the last climb up Lucas Valley was covered by lush canopies and the grade on the climb wasn’t bad at all, before we knew it we were on top of the hill ready to descend down for 6 miles back to the parking lot!

It was another tough Fondo, just as it should be. Congrats to everyone for completing the September Fondo. Thanks to all who came out to ride! Arnel, James, Pablo, and Will coming out from the Castro Valley & Union City areas. Glad y’all were able to make it!

Next week, as usual after a Grand Fondo, we are going to dial it back to a 49 mile ride with 3400 ft of climbing! It’s going to be a good one! Hope to see you guys then. Don’t miss out!
